Slavery North invites you to our inaugural art exhibition at UMass Amherst.
Sowing History, Reaping Justice: Writing Children’s Books About Slavery in Canada and the US North features 18 original illustrated children’s books created by the students in Dr. Charmaine A. Nelson’s 2025 UMass Amherst art history course, The Visual Culture of Slavery. This exhibition showcases powerful and age-appropriate educational tools that illuminate the lives and experiences of enslaved black people in Canada and the US North.
