On July 11th, 2026, Dr. Richard Bell delivered his keynote presentation at Slavery North’s Rebellion, Resistance, and Refuge: : Slavery and Border-Crossing during the American Revolution conference. In the talk, Dr. Bell repositions the American Revolution at the center of an international web that ranges as far afield as India, Africa, Central America, and Australia. Bell conveys the impact of these developments at home and abroad by grounding the narrative in the gripping stories of individuals— including women, minorities, and other disenfranchised people. Dr. Richard Bell is a Professor of History at the University of Maryland. His research focus is American history between 1750 and 1877.
